Waste Resources, the City of Gardena’s franchised solid waste hauler, is continuing the rollout of mandatory organics recycling by announcing the start of residential mixed organics recycling on July 1, 2022.
This improvement to the city’s overall residential recycling program is a result of statewide regulations that went into effect January 1, 2022 and are slowly rolling out across California. These wide-reaching regulations set statewide targets to reduce organic waste disposal and increase edible food recovery to serve the food insecure. Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills, despite current efforts.
Senate Bill 1383 requires the MANDATORY separation of food scraps and food-soiled paper away from the trash and into the green container. Information about this change will be included in a mailer that will be sent to Gardena residents in June, but more detail can be found on WR’s SB1383 page. Also included in a new list of what items go in which container.
It is important for everyone to do their part to be sure the city complies will all laws related to trash and recycling. Customers that do not adhere to the requirements may be fined for non-compliance.
